January 22-23, 2011
Henry Coe State Park
Camping Trip

We had a fantastic backpacking trip to Henry Coe State Park this weekend. We left San Carlos a little after 8am and, after a leisurely drive down to Henry Coe, were on the trail by 10:30. The hike in was 3.9 miles and we arrived at the Poverty Flats camp site by noon. The camp was situated in a beautiful valley right by Coyote creek. After lunch the scouts played some frisbee and then hiked along (and in) the creek down to China Hole and The Narrows. Dinner consisted of a variety of freeze-dried meals and was finished by dark. The stars came out and with the aid of Mr. Keenan's star chart we were able to identify quite a few constellations.

The next morning came with quite a bit of frost and some frozen socks and shoes that had been left out to "dry". After breakfast the scouts practiced taking down their tents and after a few trys were able to get packed up. The hike out was a bit longer given the steep up hill for the first mile (20% grades at times!) and it took 2 1/2 hours. We all descended upon IN n Out in Morgan Hill for a burger fest for lunch and then headed home.
