Adult Training
The more trained leaders and adults in general you have in the troop or on an outing the greater you reduce your risk to something happening and help reduce your risk of liability. The more trained adults you have in the troop and on an outing and an event does occur the more likely BSA will support you.

If you have not already done so, please go to
www.scouting.org and click on Adult Training and complete the Youth Protection online training at the very least. While you are at it I encourage you to complete the Boy Scout Leader Fast Start training.

Youth Protection will clearly explain how to avoid any precarious circumstance you may be exposed to by recognizing it before it happens. Boy Scout Leader Training will clearly explain to you what two deep leadership is and what is the expectation of an adult leader/parent when out in the field with the scouts. This is the first training step for all new leaders and should be taken immediately after they register and before they meet with any youth members in the troop.

Also, I encourage you complete Hazardous Weather training if you are participating in an outdoor adventure. The module presents safety precautions for eight different types of weather, as well as planning, preparation, and traditional weather signs.

If there is going to be any rock climbing involved then it is highly advised that you do the “Climb on Safely” portion as well.

Memorial Day Activity
On Saturday, May 29, 2010 , the Boy Scouts will continue in a rich tradition and pay tribute to the men and women who served our country by placing an American flag at each of the 140,000 graves at the Golden Gate National Cemetery. This is a worthwhile experience and our troop had a good turnout last year and it would be great if we could do so again.

ADULT COORDINATOR: Karen S.
PLACE: Golden Gate National Cemetery
1300 Sneath Lane, San Bruno
WHEN: Saturday, May 29 Plan for arrival time: 7:30-8:15 a.m.

You will need to make your own arrangements to arrive at Golden Gate National Cemetery between 7:30-8:15am. There is a brief ceremony at 8:30 in advance of the flag decoration assignment. This activity requires your class A uniform and typically records as four service hours. Karen needs as accurate a list as soon as possible so that everyone who attends can receive a Memorial patch.

Please send Karen S. an email ASAP notifying her if you plan to attend as she needs a grand total before the May 19th deadline to ensure all participants receive a patch.

If you still want to participate and have not notified Karen in advance, it's OK...she will try to have a few extra patches, but make sure you look for her so she can note your attendance for service hours.

Karen is also continuing to work with Golden Gate's onsite management to hopefully increase the number of pokers (a necessary tool for proper flag placement) available for our troop.

Scouts, when placing the flags make sure that the flags are in good shape. If the flags are torn or in bad shape, please leave those flags by the box or the roadside. No flags are to go home.

As always, Krispy Creme Doughnuts and hot coffee available at 7:30.

Hometown Days Update
Scouts, Parents, and Leaders,
We had a great job done by Troop 321 at Hometown Days this year.

We had one of the best groups for the parade: Grant W. got the group organized. The other Scouts marching were: Jonathan M., Glen M., Monojit C., Ted A., Dominick K., Taylor G., Owen H., and Justin G. They did it all. I only would get another harness out so that another Scout would have a chance to carry a flag.

Great job by the traffic control group for the fun run. The troop manned two water stations and five intersections. Jeff W. even hauled the table and material to the intersection that they indicated on the plan. It had been left off at a different intersection. Those helping on Saturday morning were: Lee M., Hunter M., Monojit C., Manish C., Karen T., Charlie T., Alexander T., John L., Mark L., Jonathan M., Paul K., Glen M., Grant W. Robert G., Paul G., Jeff W., Stewart R., Arten R., Bobbie G., and John G. Bill M. was helping at a different intersection as A Belmont Policeman volunteer.

The troop had a great group helping with clean-up. It was a tough day for the trash collection. the wind was blowing and swirling. The group would clean one area, then the wind would swirl and there would be trash were the group just cleaned. It did not help that the Chamber of Commerce gave us the trash bags that go in the cardboard trash cans. They blew in the wind so that it was difficult to get the trash in and they ripped easily. But the group was finished by 5:30 p.m. Here is the group: Doug M., Paul M., Taylor G., Chris G., Karen S., Carson S., Matthew H., John H., Alex D., Griffin K., Shafer K., Candace K., Luc W., Owen H., Wei H., Kyle L.. I feel that I am missing some helpers. If you helped on Sunday afternoon, please let me know.

Mr. Kevin C. has the list of helpers in Lions Club booth.

Again, Great Job and Thanks,

Brian J.

ALSO: HUGE thanks to both Brian & Robin for manning the Troop 321 booth on both days.

Monojit and Manish C. also helped Hunter & Dad in the wind-blown clean-up efforts yesterday.

PS: Shafer K. found a cell phone in the grass yesterday during the first of two passes in big field area. At the end of the afternoon I called one of the missed calls that were displayed on the phone and located the owner; an 10-11 yr. old boy who skateboarded over to the youth center at 6:00 to retrieve---he was VERY appreciative. Good work Schafer!

PSS: I had to drive past Burton Park last nite around 8:00 and then again this morning. The field looked so clean and GREAT you'd never know that it'd just endured a huge event. The Thunderbirds had a GREAT turnout! Congratulations!

- Lee M.

Scoutmaster Transition
Hello Troop 321 Families,

After two years of devoted service, our Scoutmaster Mr. Robin F. will be stepping down and joining the illustrious group of former T321 Scoutmasters. We are grateful to Mr. F. for the many, many hours he has put in for the benefit of the Troop! Please join me in thanking Robin for giving of his time so generously over his career in Troop 321.

We are pleased and honored to welcome our incoming Scoutmaster Mr. Mark K. who will take over the position following the upcoming Court of Honor. We in the Troop Committee are looking forward to working with Mr. K. in growing Troop 321 into an even stronger organization in our community. We are grateful to him for stepping up to this meaningful challenge and know that he will be a dedicated leader for our boys in the months to come.

About Mr. K:
Mark Keenan grew up in a small town in southern Georgia where he spent time in the outdoors on the family farm, hunting and fishing and at summer camps. He was a Life scout and a member of the Order of the Arrow when his Boy Scout career was interrupted by going away to boarding school. After school, Mark continued to enjoy the outdoors with extended trips canoeing in Canada, sailing in the Carribean, and trekking in the Himalayas. Mark moved to San Carlos in 1992 when he was with Intel Corporation and now runs TechniCon Corporation. He is eager to do what he can to provide the boys of San Carlos with a great Scouting experience. Mark is the father of Dominick Keenan, a member of the Blue Beavers patrol.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions regarding this transition.

Best Regards,
Kristin.H.
Troop 321 Committee Chairman

Point Reyes Update
After an eye-opener climb to start the trip, the crew established base camp at Sky Campground. Group sites 2 a/b had very little level space, but did provide a stunning (albeit brief) view of the Pacific, complete with vultures circling lazily over the hillside. The Scouts and adults were regaled with a procession of wildlife offerings courtesy of Matthew and others (notably Rory, who discovered the photogenic gopher snake with his foot.) After some extensive arboreal recreation, the group was treated to a sumptuous meal, courtesy of our Chefs du jour, Alex, Dominick, Luc, and Matthew.

Although the planned night ascent of Mount Wittenberg looked "iffy" due to a momentary flagging in Scout Spirit, noted Peak-bagger Mr. Giani rallied the troops (he really wanted that patch) and the crew (some for the second time that day) made the twilight trip in an expeditious fashion, before the fog descended in earnest.

The group all benefited from the masterful leadership skills of our SPL Scott K., and ASPLs Dominick K. and Tristan L!

Camp Emerald Bay
Hi Scouts,
I am Sean C’s father, Evan, and will be going to Camp Emerald Bay with you next month. This should be a very fun trip and I expect excellent weather and lots of excitement.

I would like to setup the transportation and need to get feedback from everyone on the travel plan. Last year the scouts took a group SouthWest flight down to LA and then a shuttle to the harbor (doing the reverse on the trip back). I propose we do the same thing this year and will coordinate making arrangements. However, I understand some families might have other plans so please let me know if you do NOT want to take either the flight down or back with the group. Right now the fares are around $80 each way plus the shuttle bus cost.

Also, the scouts need to get their merit badge choices into Mr. Juri so he can enter them into the system. If you have not done so already, please take care of that in the next week or two. If you have any questions please let me know. If you haven’t been to the Emerald Bay website it has some nice information for the scouts and parents at:
www.campemeraldbay.org/

Thanks,
Evan C.

Wilderness First Aid
Wilderness First Aid is being taugh Saturday, May 22nd, at Boulder Creek. Although the Pacsky site says registration closed May 10th, Robin F. talked to Gary Bracken who is teaching the course and Gary says that if you go to the web site and register you can take the course. You will get the books at the class.

Click here to see a description of the course, the online learning process and prerequisites. Go to www.paratusinstitute.com to register.

Each crew at Philmont must have at least one person certified in Wilderness First Aid and one person certified in CPR. CPR is being taught on the 21st after 4 pm at Boulder Creek. Wilderness First Aid is a great course for anyone that spends time backpacking or camping.

Troop Planning Meeting
Tuesday May 18th at 7:30 pm at Mahany Hall is the annual planning meeting for the year. The Scouts will decide and vote on where they want to go camping, and what activities to have, for the year from Sept. 2010 to June 2011, including Summer Camps and High Adventure.

The Troop has already planned in advance, because of the long lead time for reservations, to camp at Rob Hill in San Francisco on October 9th and to camp at Angel Island on November 6th.

For September, the Troop should plan a car camping trip and invite the Cub Scouts, as we did last year at Memorial Park. Inviting the Cub Scouts to camp with us early in the year is important for recruiting purposes.

In February the Troop traditionally goes snow camping at Dodge Ridge near Mr. Juri’s cabin.

The Troop has planned a Philmont trek from July 13 to the 25th 2011. Backpacking trips to prepare for Philmont should be planned at the planning meeting.

If any parents have suggestions to offer as to camping trips or destinations or other activities they are welcome to make their offers.

The Patrol Leaders Council will meet at 7 pm prior to the Troop meeting. All Patrol Leaders and Assistant Patrol Leaders are welcome to attend the meeting.

Annual Troop Elections
The annual Troop elections will take place this Tuesday, May 11th at 7:30 pm at the Troop Meeting at Mahany Hall. Each patrol will elect the Patrol Leader and Assistant Patrol Leader. The Troop will elect the following leaders:

Senior Patrol Leaders – 3
Librarian – keeps the
Historian
Order of the Arrow Representative
Scribe
Quartermaster

Please send Robin F. an email if you plan to run for any of these offices. If you plan to run for Patrol Leader or Assistant Patrol Leader of your patrol, please send me an email and tell me you are running.

Next week, on May 18th, we will have the annual planning meeting where the Scouts will decide where they want to go camping, and where they want to go to Summer Camp, for the next year. Because of the 6 month lead time for some reservations, we have already made reservations for October 9, 2010 at Rob Hill Campground in the Presidio in San Francisco, and for November 6, 2010 at Angel Island.
The Scouts will need to decide where to camp in September, when we invite Cub Scouts to join us for car camping, at some nearby car camping site.

Next year will also be a year of preparation for the two crews we are sending to Philmont, so backpacking trips should be planned as preparation for the Philmont group. Some campsites, such as Big Basin, could be used for car camping for some scouts and backpacking for others.

In addition to the regular Summer Camps at least one of our Scouts is planning to go to Camp Oljato as a provisional camper for the week of August 1st to the 7th. If you are interested in going to Oljato as a provisional camper for Aug. 1-7, please send me an email and copy Lee M., lee.manter@teecom.com .

The Patrol Leaders Council will meet at 7 pm prior to the Troop Meeting. - Robin F.

BSA Coins
If you didn't have a chance to purchase the 2010 BSA Centennial Proof Silver Dollar from the US Mint - they are now sold out. However, they are for sale at The Coin Broker, in Palo Alto. The Silver Dollar is beautiful, and it comes in a very nice velvet gift box. It costs a little more than advertised previously through the Mint ($49.95), but you don't have to pay shipping. I understand the owner of the store has helped many a scout earn the coin collecting merit badge.
